They think they are invincible, Cesca. That's why they do it. They have such bravado and don't care about the rest of us, just their "need for speed" addiction. They don't realize the gravity of their situation, what they are risking by the need for speed. If you all like motorcycles, there's no need for speed or driving recklessly. Drive responsibly; like an adult SHOULD drive. Forget the highway hijinx.
I think maybe they get caught up in the moment, too, no? Like, drunk on adrenaline? I don’t know. I’ve never been a daredevil! I hate having adrenaline rushes!!
I love your haiku at the beginning, although the subject matter is sad. 😞 Thank you for sharing such poignant thoughts. It’s truly tragic to witness the consequences of reckless speed on the road, and your concern for both the riders and the families affected is evident. The trauma faced by first responders and the heartache for loved ones left behind is unimaginable. I echo your plea for motorcyclists and drivers alike to prioritize safety over speed. Life is precious, and our choices can make a significant difference—not just for ourselves, but for everyone sharing the road. We all deserve to enjoy our passions while staying safe. Your message of love and care for others is so important!
Charlotte, thank you. Every weekend (during the week, too, but more so on weekends) we hear the revs of speed freaks, and then, sadly, quite often, the scream of sirens. I suppose first responders get used to it, but still. Such a waste of life, and often it's young lives. My son has a friend who bought a huge motorbike and my son saw him driving like a maniac down the motorway in the early morning traffic, weaving in and out. I pray nothing happens to him, he's such a lovely young man. Life is complicated and scary enough without adding this type of behaviour. But I suppose that when we are young we are immortal. My son skateboards (he's an amazing skateboarder) without a helmet. Rides his bicycle without a helmet. I've wasted so many words on trying to convince him that his head is like an egg, and if he bangs it on concrete...well... Not going there.
Excellent Advice, Cesca!
Sometimes I think the people who take such risks have no imagination.
It’s either that, or they think they are too good or too lucky for accidents.
I agree 1000%!!

I don't like to, either. People need to learn to relax and make it easy for yourself.

A wonderful yet rightful somber poem. Also the double meaning of the ‘hit of speed’ line was fantastic. :)
