I read it and felt my whole body tilt toward that lake—ready to be there instantly, to be held in dusk's hush and birds' delight, anywhere but here. Here, in this polished little spa town, slowly thickening with the weekend’s crowd: the affluent and the aspiring, weaving through us rehab folks like threads in a fabric none of us chose.
Some sip the fabled salty phosphorous spring, grimacing behind designer glasses. Others pose on stone balustrades, their Abitur gowns shimmering like knock-off Oscar fantasies. This town, Bad Kissingen, goes all out. Graduation balls happen in the Regentenbau—a 1911 imperial jewel, all marble and chandeliers. I did mine in our school’s assembly hall, fluorescent lights and folding chairs.
Looking around now, I still count as one of the younger ones in the mix (High School graduates not counted). Most around me seem to be gently gliding into their late seventies, walking sticks tapping in soft rhythm and rollators rumbling over the pavement. Some indecipherable music starting to come from the rose garden, sounding like sound track by Hans Zimmer.
And yet, reading your piece, I was with you—right there among the birds, catching the wind mid-swoop. What a gift, this kind of transport.
Poetic teleportation! You took me to see your polished spa town with the designer gowns and sunglasses. Thanks for reading and for your lovely commentary, Jay 🙏❤️
Francesca, I’d so much love to be everywhere but here, reading English is a little holiday for my soul and fascia, where it starts to relax again after having tensed up the whole day.
Thanks, Wendy. I like this poem too. I took notes while watching them and wrote it the following day. They did their show again last night, but the sky wasn’t quite as spectacular.
So evocative! I love this one, Cesca.😍
Thanks Trudi. I love this one, too :)
